Traffic regulations e-scooter

E-scooters are considered "mopeds class A" (Belgium) or "mopeds" (the Netherlands). The rules below always apply:

  • Wearing a helmet by driver and passenger is mandatory at all times
  • The driver must hold a driver's license B or AM/A3
  • You may not pull anyone ahead.
  • You have to keep your hands on the wheel and your feet on the pedals.
  • It is forbidden to hold electrical devices, such as smartphones, unless you are stationary or parked.
  • No more passengers may be carried than there are seats on the e-scooter.
  • Children may join in from 8 years old. 
  • It is always mandatory to ride in the bike lane if designated, unless otherwise indicated by traffic signals.
